That is not an answer. Below are six checks a patient can actually perform — before booking, in the consultation room, and during the session itself. None of them requires technical knowledge, and none of them should make a clinic uncomfortable. 1. Ask Which Generation of the Device Is in the Room
"Ultherapy" on a price list does not tell you which version of the platform you are booking.
The current generation is Ultherapy Prime; earlier systems are still in clinical use and still legitimately called Ultherapy. The mechanism is the same, but imaging resolution, transducer configuration, and treatment speed differ. A clinic quoting a Prime price for an earlier platform is not selling you a counterfeit — it is selling you something other than what you thought you were buying.

2. Know Which Clearances Apply Before You Walk In
The Ultherapy system holds specific US FDA clearances, and knowing which ones lets you judge whether a quoted treatment area matches the cleared indication.
The system is cleared for non-invasive lifting of the brow, submentum, and neck under 510(k) K121700, with the original device clearance issued in 2009. The Prime platform received its own expanded indication clearance in 2018.
You do not need to memorize the numbers. The point is that a real device has a documented regulatory trail, and a clinic that treats a question about it as an inconvenience is giving you information.

3. Ask for the Cartridge to Be Opened in Front of You
Each Ultherapy transducer cartridge is supplied sealed and carries a finite number of lines, which makes the unopened package the single most informative thing you can look at.
Asking to see the cartridge before it is loaded is a normal request, and asking that it be opened in your presence is equally normal. What you are confirming is simple: that a cartridge is being used for your session, and that it has not already been partially depleted on someone else.
The reaction matters as much as the object. A clinic that handles this as routine is one that expects it.
4. Watch the Remaining-Lines Counter During Your Session
The device displays how many lines remain, which means the shot count you paid for is verifiable in real time rather than on trust.
This is the most practical check on the list, because it converts an abstract worry into a number on a screen. If you were quoted a specific count, the counter should move accordingly across the session. You can ask to see it at the start and again at the end.

5. Confirm Who Will Actually Hold the Handpiece
A genuine device in the wrong hands still produces a poor result, which makes the operator a verification question rather than a separate topic.
Line placement is a clinical judgment about depth and vector made against your facial anatomy. It is the variable that most affects outcome. In some clinics the physician conducts the consultation and a staff member performs the treatment, and patients frequently do not learn this until they are already on the table.
